Newport RI- Kevin Long is returning to Newport this summer as the Gulls pitching coach after serving from 2011 to 2015. Long reunites with Manager Mike Coombs, capturing two NECBL Championships and three Division Championships while with Newport. Long is a great addition to a very experienced coaching staff.
Prior to joining the Gulls, Long was familiar with the NECBL, serving as an assistant coach with the Danbury Westerners. He also held the position of pitching coach with the Wareham Gatemen of the Cape Cod Baseball League in 2009. Long pursued his passion for coaching college baseball while still working as a detective for the Miami Police Department. Upon his retirement in 2003, Long accepted a position as a pitching coach on the Miami-Dade College staff, and in 2014, his Miami-Dade team was the national runner-up in the JUCO World Series.
While with Newport, 10 of his pitchers reached the Major Leagues, while hundreds signed professional contracts. In 2013, Long helped guide the Gulls pitching staff to the top of the NECBL, leading the league in ERA (2.18), wins (30), and saves (13), and were second in the league with 381 strikeouts through 44 games. “I’ve coached at Danbury and in the Cape Cod League,’ Long said, “and because of the places I've been, I know that this is one of the best collegiate programs in the country, and this is the place to be.”.

The Newport Gulls, members of the 13-team New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL), are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, founded as the Rhode Island Gulls in 1998 in Cranston, R.I., before moving to Newport in 2001. In addition to recruiting, fielding, and developing a team of the nation’s top collegiate baseball athletes and attracting 50,000 fans annually to Cardines Field, the predominantly volunteer organization strives to benefit the community via summer camps, reading programs, fundraisers, scholarships, and charitable donations – totaling over $1 million since 2001. The Gulls are seven-time champions of the NECBL – the winningest franchise in league history – and were ranked as the overall No. 1 summer collegiate baseball team in the country by Perfect Game USA in 2012.
