Gulls Release Projected 2022 Roster
NEWPORT, RI- Although the 2021 season did not end with a seventh NECBL Championship, it was still a successful all-around season. The Gulls finished with a winning record of 22-20 and welcomed 48,698 fans to Cardines Field throughout the summer. The 2021 Roster featured talent including Justin Guerrera (Fairfield), Jack Aldrich (Tulane), and Jimmy Kingsbury (Villanova) who departed the team mid-season after being selected in the 2021 MLB Draft. Infielders Spenser Smith (Northeastern) and Dawson Brigman (Santa Clara) joined Outfielder Sam Cochrane (College of Charleston), Catcher Matthew Wood (Penn State), and pitchers Grant Umberger (Virginia Tech), and Kellan Tulio (Lousiville) on the 2021 All-Star Team. Both Tulio and Wood also earned spots on the All-NECBL Team for their impressive performances throughout the year. With the New Year now underway, the Newport Gulls are getting ready for summer 2022, and have signed nearly all their roster for the upcoming season.
The Gulls are excited to welcome back a few key pieces from last year’s roster including two of the top three most utilized bullpen arms Liam Levangie (Bryant) and Peter Sakellaris (Virginia). Levangie appeared in 11 games for the Gulls in 2021 going 2-0, striking out 34, and only walking six batters over 26.2 innings. Right-Handed Pitcher Sakellaris pitched 19.1 innings for the Gulls last summer striking out 10 batters while picking up 4 saves. Infielder Spencer Smith (Northeastern) will also rejoin the club after playing in 37 games, belting four Homeruns, 19 RBIs, and stealing six bases. RHP Seamus Barrett also spent time with Newport in 2021, but unfortunately suffered an injury that forced him to leave after throwing in two games and striking out 13 in 6.2 innings. All four of these returners will not have to travel far for 2022 as they hail from Massachusetts.
In addition to the returning Gulls, several newcomers are also native to the New England region. OF Benzan Rounds (Harvard) and INF Luke Beckstein (Northeastern) are also from Massachusetts. INF Noah Martinez (Central CT), RHP Tyler Cortland (Dartmouth), RHP John Lumpinski (Binghamton), and LHP Dominic Perachi (Salve Regina) are all Connecticut natives. Perachi marks the second Gulls player to come from local Salve Regina University after fellow left-handed pitcher Patrick Maybach played for Newport in 2019.
Not only will the team be filled with some of the best local athletes, but Newport will also welcome players from across the country. Right-Handed pitcher Parker Wright and Catcher Tre Morris are extremely familiar with each other as they both grew up in Columbia, Missouri, and will continue as teammates this summer since both currently attend the University of Missouri. Players from Georgia, Colorado, Kentucky, and Oregon are a few of the many states represented on this summer’s roster.
Height is a theme of the 2022 roster, with 11 players standing above six-foot-four including RHP James Hepp (UCLA) at 6’ 7”, and RHP Chase Allen (Michigan) at 6’ 6”.
This year’s most represented school, sending three players to the Gulls, is the University of Louisville. Along with the previously mentioned Seamus Barret, Newport is excited for the arrival of LHP Trevor Amburgey and Outfielder Eddie King Jr.
Following an injury that left him unable to join the Gulls in 2021, OF Coleman Brigman (Santa Clara) follows in his brother, 2021 NECBL All-Star Dawson Brigman footsteps’, to Newport for this upcoming season.
In addition to height, age is another common theme with the incoming players for 2022. There are only five true freshmen joining the Gulls roster, with the remaining signees having a plethora of college and summer ball experience, including quite a few rising seniors.
Leading up to the season, feature stories that dive into detail will be released on the individuals mentioned above as well as the remainder of the student-athletes that make up this summer’s team. Stay tuned to Newportgulls.com as well as the Gulls Social Media Accounts to learn about who will be joining everyone at Cardines Field in June and July.

The Newport Gulls, members of the 13-team New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL), are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, founded as the Rhode Island Gulls in 1998 in Cranston, R.I., before moving to Newport in 2001. In addition to recruiting, fielding, and developing a team of the nation’s top collegiate baseball athletes and attracting 50,000 fans annually to Cardines Field, the predominantly volunteer organization strives to benefit the community of Newport County via summer camps, reading programs, fundraisers, scholarships, and charitable donations – totaling over $1 million since 2001. The Gulls are six-time champions of the NECBL – the winningest franchise in league history – and were ranked as the overall No. 1 summer collegiate baseball team in the country by Perfect Game USA in 2012.
